Sundarvan was inaugurated by the legendary ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali on October 28, 1978. This four acre Nature Discovery Centre was originally a mango orchard. It is a unique facility created for experiencing and understanding nature, animals and birds. Fondly known as the ‘Snake Park’, Sundarvan has been conducting snake awareness programmes since its inception.

Recognised as a mini zoo by the Central Zoo Authority of India (CZA), Government of India, Sundarvan has a collection of reptiles, birds, small mammals, a butterfly garden and an aquarium. Sundarvan’s activities with children and youth act as a catalyst to stimulate in them a process of inquiry into nature. A very popular place among children and adults, Sundarvan receives nearly 100,000 (one lakh) visitors annually. This Nature Discovery Centre is located in the heart of the city of Ahmedabad and is an activity of Centre for Environment Education (CEE).

Set in the heart of Ahmedabad city, it is a lush green zoo that whisks you away from the daily dust and noise, and engages your senses with the beauty and sounds of nature. Using the zoo as an educational platform since 1978, children who once played on these grounds grew up to be nature conscious citizens bringing their children here today. Kids as well as adults are welcome to be a part of our living classroom.
